Consumer Products Packaging
Semester Taught - Spring

Catalog Description:

Credits:3      Covers packaging methods, materials, forms and strategies used for consumer products. Teams will prepare a packaging plan with associated mock-ups for a proposed consumer product.

Pre-requisites/Co-requisites:

None

Course Objectives:

Students will gain an understanding of packages used in different retail segments and explore development of new products using processes such as focus groups, surveys, prototyping and testing. Examples will include case studies of successful and failed new packages

Fundamentals of Packaging Technology, Soroka, (1999). Other readings and materials will be assigned as needed throughout the semester.

Trends in different consumer products sectors

Cost, Risk and Environmental Issues
Degradable packaging, environmental rules and the regulation trends
Graphic design and decoration of packaging, creating an impression
Packaging new technologies and trends

V.New Product Development
Strategy development, Idea generation,
Product screening and evaluation, Focus groups,
Testing, Major packaging considerations

VI. Review of Materials, Forms and Manufacturing Techniques
Celluloses (paperboard, corrugate and paper),
Polymer (Films, extruded polymeric and coated),

Grading:

The class grade will be derived from two exams, an oral presentation (topics related to a specific retail sector), plus a written and oral packaging plan developed in two stages. A personal folder on new package development will also be graded twice during the semester. No grades are 'curved'. Absences will only be excused when timely voice message or e-mail notice is given by the student to the instructor. Shown below is the grading scale:
