ADMISSION POLICY
The Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department offers graduate degree programs through the College of Engineering and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Please refer to the admission requirements below for Master's, Ph.D. or the combined BS/ME or BS/MS degree.
  • General Requirements

    Admission to a Master's program requires a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) (based on a 4.00 system) in the upper division undergraduate program of study and acceptable scores on the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing portions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for admission. The minimum requirements for admission into the Engineer degree program or any Ph.D. degree program (ABE, AOM, or applied science) are a 3.00 upper division undergraduate GPA, 3.25 graduate GPA and acceptable scores on the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing portions of the GRE. No student who has failed a qualifier or final graduate exam at another University of Florida department will be admitted for graduate study in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department.     International students whose native tongue is not English and who have not studied for at least one year in a U.S. college or university must submit a minimum score of 213 on the computer-based, 550 on the paper-based or 80 for the internet-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Conditional admission may be offered by the Departmental graduate committee to students who do not satisfy the admission criteria including the cases of a deficiency in either the GRE, TOEFL or GPA requirement. A conditionally-admitted student must meet the conditions set forth in his/her admission letter in order that subsequent registration may be allowed.

    We offer a combined B.S./M.S. or M.E. degree whereby up to 12 credits of graduate courses may be double-counted toward credit fulfillment of the B.S. and M.S./M.E. degrees. Please check the undergraduate catalog or contact the graduate coordinator for qualifications and details.

     

  • Master's Degree

    Admission to the Master of Engineering program normally requires the completion of a B.S. degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering or related engineering specialty from an undergraduate program accredited by ABET. If a student desires a Master of Engineering with a major in Agricultural and Biological Engineering but does not have an undergraduate degree that has an ABET - equivalency, then it will be necessary for the student to complete these requirements through articulation. The current ABET requirements are given in Appendix A of the Engineering Graduate Student Manual. As part of the ABET design requirement, the student would be required to take a minimum of 12 credits of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) design courses. In some cases a student may not be required to meet every requirement, however exceptions will be made only after a review by the departmental graduate committee. The required articulation work for any graduate degree must be completed with a GPA of at least 3.00. Articulation course work should be completed as early as possible in the student's graduate program.

    Admission to the Master of Science degree program in the College of Engineering requires a Bachelor of Science degree with courses including analytic geometry, calculus, differential equations, 8 credits of general physics and 8 credits of general chemistry, or equivalent. Admission does not require an engineering B.S. degree. However, the student's supervisory committee and the Department graduate committee may require articulation courses to assure a sufficient background for graduate study.

    Admission to the Master of Science program in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences requires a B.S. degree in Agricultural Operations Management from an undergraduate program recognized by the P-206 Committee of American Society of Agricultural Engineers or equivalent. See Appendix B of the CALS Graduate Student Manual for P-206 requirements. In addition, the student must have a working knowledge of one or more computer languages. Students who are lacking the necessary working knowledge of a computer language will be required to take sufficient courses to attain the required proficiency. If a student does not have the P-206 recognized undergraduate Agricultural Operations Management degree or equivalent and does desire a Master of Science degree in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, then he/she must complete the P-206 equivalent requirements through articulation.

  • Ph.D. Degree

    Admission to the Ph.D. program in Agricultural and Biological Engineering or the Engineer degree program requires holding a B.S. degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering or related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited undergraduate program or its equivalent. In most cases, the student must also have earned a Master's degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering or related engineering field or in other physical or life sciences. Only under rare circumstances will a student be allowed to pursue an engineering Ph.D. directly after the completion of the B.S. degree.

    Admission to the Ph.D. program in Agricultural Operations Management (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) requires holding a B.S. degree in AOM or related P-206 recognized management discipline. In addition the student must have earned a Master's degree in AOM or a related management discipline.

    Admission to the Applied Science Ph.D. program requires a B.S.degree in a basic science field and a master's degree in a science or engineering field with courses including analytic geometry, calculus, differential equations, 8 credits of general physics and 8 credits of general chemistry, or equivalent. If these requirements are not already met, the student must articulate to meet them.
